Hawks Take Down Maryville, Clinch USA South Championship

Montgomery, Ala.-The Huntingdon Football Team defeated Maryville, 52-33. With this win, the Hawks have secured the USA South Conference Championship for the 6th time in 7 years.

The Hawks' offense started strong, with quarterback Landon Cotney finding Dallas Daffin for a touchdown pass just 40 seconds into the game.

At 9:53 in the first quarter, Cotney found Malachi Harvey with a 23-yard touchdown pass to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead. 

At 8:04 in the first quarter, Cotney rushed 4 yards for a touchdown. Just 4 minutes later at 4:42, Cotney found Harvey once again for a 77-yard touchdown drive. 

At 11:42 in the second quarter, Will Edwards kicked a 21-yard field goal to give the Hawks a 31-0 lead. Cotney rushed 37 yards for a touchdown at 7:05.

The Scots offense came alive for a touchdown with just 47 seconds left in the first half, making the score 38-7 going into the second half.

Landon Cotney's 11 yard rush at 7:14 in the third quarter made it 45-7.

Maryville answered back at 4:46 with a 28-yard touchdown pass to make it 45-14. Maryville scored 2 more times, 1:16 in the third quarter and 5:06 in the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 45-27. 

Kahari McReynolds rushed 1 yard for a touchdown at 3:00 in the fourth quarter , capping off a 90 yard, 4 play drive. 

With 20 seconds left in the game, the Scots found the endzone on a 2-yard touchdown pass but failed on the 2-point conversion attempt. 

Landon Cotney was 18-26 with 362 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Troy Garner led the Hawks with 93 rushing yards. Malachi Harvey led the team with 4 receptions for 137 yards, including 2 touchdowns.

Tucker Spence led the defense with 10 total tackles, including a sack for a 10-yard loss.

"I am really proud of this team and all that it has overcome this year," Head Coach MIke Turk said. "We played really well today, especially in the first half. The second half got a little sloppy but we did enough to secure the win. We showed signs of playing our best football today and that is encouraging."

The Hawks travel to LaGrange for the final regular season game on Saturday, November 13th. Kickoff is set for 12 PM CST.
