Hawks tied for first after Rd. 1 of Jekyll Island Collegiate

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's golf team opened the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational with its best round of the spring.

The Hawks shot 289 in the opening round on Friday and are tied for first in the 30-team field. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps also shot 289 on Friday. LaGrange is third at 290.

"This was a great day for the guys," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "The weather was really difficult today, but the boys were determined to get off to a good start. It was great to see all five guys feeding off of each other. This team has a really good chemistry and our skills are continuing to improve. I'm excited to see what Saturday has in store."

Two Hawks shot under-par in the opening round and Huntingdon's top four scores were within seven strokes of first place. Entering Saturday's second round, sophomores Will Thrash and Garrett Harrison are tied for sixth at 1-under-par 71.

Freshman Mac Harris shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 22nd in the 150-player field. Junior David James shot 2-over 74 and is tied for 28th. Freshman Peter Scrimgeour shot 6-over 78.

Methodist's Mason Stutler turned in the low round on Friday with a 5-under 67.
