Softball closes regular season with sweep of Covenant

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team closed out conference play with an 8-5 and 5-3 sweep of Covenant on Saturday.                        

With the wins, the Lady Hawks (28-12, 13-3 USA South) finish the regular season as the No. 3 seed in the West Division of the USA South. Huntingdon will host LaGrange in the first round of the conference tournament.

The first two games of the best-of-three first-round series will be played on April 19. Game 3, if needed, will be played on April 20. Times had not been finalized as of Saturday night.

The winner of the first-round series will advance to the double elimination portion of the conference tournament.

With Saturday's sweep, Huntingdon pushed its win total to 28 games, tying the program's NCAA-era record for wins in a season set in 2012.

The Lady Hawks put together 20 hits in the two games with Covenant (11-22, 6-10 USA South) as eight players finished with multiple hits.

In Game 1, Huntingdon scored seven runs in the seventh inning to rally for the victory. Annie Nolan was 3-for-4 with a run, Caitlyn Caffee was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Kaci Cochran was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run.                            

Alyssa Singleterry had two RBIs, a run and two stolen bases, Lydia Lewis had two hits and a run, Rayne Ellis and Madison Perryman each had an RBI and a run and McKenzie Ridgway scored one run.

Madison Hunt (16-3) earned the win in both games. Hunt pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief in Game 1 and pitched 5 1/3 innings in Game 2. Lauren Melton pitched the final 1 2/3 innings of Game 2 to earn her second save of the season.

In Game 2, Perryman was 2-for-3 with a solo home run, an RBI and two runs and Hannah Vines was 2-for-3 with a run. Singleterry finished with two RBIs and a double and Ellis and Lewis each scored one run.
