Six Hawks recognized with release of USA South Softball Awards
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Six Huntingdon softball players were recognized with the release of the USA South All-Conference awards on Thursday.
Freshman Annie Nolan and junior Madison Hunt were named first-team All-Conference and first-team West Division. Seniors Alyssa Singleterry and Rayne Ellis and sophomores Lauren Melton and Madison Perryman were each named second-team West Division. Senior Ashley Carroll was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
This is the second consecutive season Hunt, Singleterry and Ellis have earned recognition from the USA South.
Nolan earned first-team All-Conference and Division recognition at the utility position. In her first collegiate season, Nolan is batting .329 with 28 hits, 11 RBIs, 13 runs and four doubles.
Hunt, a pitcher, was an at-large first-team All-Conference and Division selection. Hunt is 16-3 this season with a 2.18 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 134.2 innings. She has pitched 12 complete games, including three complete-game shutouts and also has one save. She ranks third in the conference and fifth in Division III in wins and is fifth in the USA South in strikeouts and sixth in ERA.
Singleterry, a second-team West Division selection at shortstop, is tied for the Division III lead with eight triples this season. A 40-game starter, she leads Huntingdon with a .344 batting average, 45 hits, 34 runs, 22 walks and 20 stolen bases and is second on the team with 26 RBIs. Singleterry is tied for sixth in the USA South in runs, tied for eighth in stolen bases and tied for 11th in hits.
Ellis, a second-team West Division outfielder, is also a 40-game starter and is batting .316 with 36 hits, 21 runs, eight RBIs, four doubles and 13 stolen bases.
Melton, a second-team West Division pitcher, is 8-3 this season with a 2.83 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 89 innings. She has pitched six complete games, one complete-game shutout and earned two saves.
Perryman, who primarily played second base this season, was an at-large second-team West Division pick. Perryman is batting .307 with 27 hits, 19 runs, 12 RBIs, one home run, five doubles, two triples and 13 stolen bases.
Huntingdon will open play in the USA South Tournament at home on Friday against LaGrange. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at noon. If a third game is needed, it will be played on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The winner advances to the double-elimination portion of the tournament in LaGrange, Ga.
Pfeiffer shortstop Vada Blue Sherrill was named USA South Player of the Year and Maryville sophomore Katlyn Smith was named Pitcher of the Year. Salem third baseman Brianne Coleman was named Rookie of the Year and Averett's Hannah Thompson was named Rookie Pitcher of the Year. North Carolina Wesleyan's John Brackett was named Coach of the Year.
