Lady Hawks split in USA South first-round series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team split with LaGrange in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday.

The Lady Hawks won the first game 5-4 but lost the second game 5-3. The two teams will play a deciding Game 3 on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to the double elimination portion of the conference tournament in LaGrange, Ga.

With the win in Game 1, Huntingdon (29-13) earned its 29th win to set the program's NCAA-era record for wins in a season.

McKenzie Ridgway and Alyssa Singleterry combined for seven of Huntingdon's 16 hits on Friday. Ridgway was 4-for-7 with two RBIs, a run and a double and Singleterry was 3-for-8 with two runs, an RBI and a triple. Singleterry, who entered the series tied for the Division III lead in triples, now has nine triples this season.

In Game 1, Huntingdon scored four runs in the second inning and built a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning. LaGrange (16-16) scored three runs in the final two innings to make it a one-run game.

Ridgway was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run in the game and Singleterry was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Kaci Cochran was 2-for-2 with an RBI, MacKenzie Smelley had one RBI and Claire Tomberlin, Hannah Vines and Lydia Lewis each scored one run.

Madison Hunt (17-4) earned the win with her 13th complete game of the season. Hunt took the loss in Game 2 in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Huntingdon carried a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning of Game 2 and led 3-2 in the sixth inning. But LaGrange answered with three runs to win the game.

Ridgway was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the second game and Rayne Ellis had two RBIs. Singleterry, Tomberlin and Madison Perryman each scored one run.

Coming Up: Huntingdon will host LaGrange in Game 3 of the best-of-three series on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to the double elimination portion of the conference tournament in LaGrange, Ga.
