Huntingdon earns one win in Averett doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The Huntingdon softball team earned one win against Averett in a doubleheader on Sunday.

The Hawks scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the first game 2-1. Huntingdon fell 10-4 in the second game.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1, Emily Nieuwstraten singled to drive in Michaela Denney and end the game. McKayla Wilson scored the Hawks' first run of the game on an RBI by Caitlyn Caffee in the second inning.

Sydney Conville accounted for three of Huntingdon's five hits in the game and finished 3-for-3. Conville was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader.

Katie Clifton (1-2) pitched a complete game for the win. Clifton struck out five, walked three, hit one batter, scattered six hits and allowed one run in seven innings. Madison Hunt (4-1) took the loss in five innings in Game 2.

Huntingdon took an early 2-0 lead in the second game. Wilson drove in Hannah Sims with a double and later scored on a single by Nieuwstraten.

Averett answered with six runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 lead. Huntingdon added two final runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Caffee that scored Nieuwstraten and Dawn Johnson.

The Cougars closed the scoring with two runs in the seventh inning.

Sims was the only Hawk with multiple hits in Game 2 and finished 2-for-4.
