Hawks Dominate Agnes Scott In Conference Opener

DECATUR, Ga- In their CCS conference opener, Huntingdon women's basketball (4-6 overall, 1-0 CCS) took down the Scotties of Agnes Scott(1-9 overall, 0-1 CCS) 75-47.

 

Highlights

 

First quarter

  • Bri McGruder opened the scoring for the Hawks at the 8:37 mark in the first period with a layup off of an assist from Lauryn Lyn

  • Cassidy Campbell drilled a shot from deep with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter to extend the Hawks lead to 5-0 early.

  • Agnes Scott got on the board at the 7:10 mark with a triple of their own, bringing the score to 5-3

  • A layup from Faith Johnson at the 5:15 mark brought the Hawks lead up to 11-5

  • The Hawks went on a 9-3 scoring run with buckets coming from Faith Johnson, Deshauna Foote, and Charity Shaw, extending the Huntingdon lead to 20-8 with a minute and a half remaining in the first quarter

  • Huntingdon closed the quarter with free throws from Kinstin Davis and Deshauna Foote, bringing the score to 24-10 at the end of the period.

Second quarter

  • Agnes Scott opened up the scoring in the second quarter with two free throws on their first possession, bringing the score to 24-12.

  • A layup from Bri McGruder at the 7:54 mark pushed the Huntingdon lead to 16, 28-12

  • With 3:59 remaining in the half, a Scottie jumpshot shrunk the Huntingdon lead to 10, 29-19

  • Following a 7-2 Huntingdon run, the Hawks closed the half leading by 12, 36-24

Third Quarter

  • Two free throws from Briana McGruder opened the second half scoring at the 8:21 mark in the third quarter, making the score 38-24

  • Following a basket from the Scotties, a three point shot from Kennedy-Ryan Jackson put Huntingdon ahead 41-26 with 7:46 remaining in the third quarter

  • A 5-0 swing from the Hawks courtesy of another triple from Kennedy-Ryan Jackson and a jumper from Kinstin Davis put the Hawks ahead by 20, 48-28 with 6 minutes to go in the period

  • The 5 point served as a catalyst sparking a 15-2 run for the Hawks, extending their lead to 57-30 with 46 seconds left in the quarter

  • Another jumpshot from Kinstin Davis in the final 10 seconds brought put Huntingdon ahead of Agnes Scott 59-32 going into the final quarter

Fourth quarter

  • The Scotties struck first in the final quarter as a part of a 5-2 run, shrinking the Huntingdon lead to 61-37

  • Faith Johnson notched the first points of the quarter for Huntingdon with a jumpshot in the paint, making the score 63-38 with 7:18 remaining in the game

  • With 4:12 remaining, Makayla Ford rang home a triple to extend the Huntingdon lead back to 25, 68-43

  • Huntingdon closed the game on a 8-0 run led by Carltajah Jackson, securing the victory 75-47.

 

When asked about her team's performance in the conference opener, coach Paige Huff said "it's great to open conference play with a win. Navigating through the holiday and coming out to take care of business is important in starting the year off on the right foot. Hopefully we build on this and keep stacking good days throughout the remainder of the season."

The Hawks look to continue their success in conference play on the road against Covenant on January 5th. Tip off is set for 5:00 PM CT.
