Hawk's Can't Find Groove Against Berea

MONTGOMERY,Ala.- Huntingdon women's basketball (5-9 overall, 2-3 CCS) fell to the Mountaineers of Berea College(13-2 overall, 6-0 CCS) 86-56 in their matchup on Saturday, January 13th.

 

How it Happened

 

First quarter

  • Both offenses got off to a slow start, with the Mountaineers earning the only two points of the first 4 minutes of play

  • The Hawks got on the board and took a 3-2 lead at the 6:34 mark on a triple from Deshauna Foote

  • Berea responded on the following possession with a three pointer of their own, retaking a 5-3 lead

  • The Mountaineers went on a 13-2 tear hold a double digit advantage, 15-5, with 3:45 to go in the quarter

  • Layups from Charity Shaw and Kinstin Davis cut into the Berea lead, but the Hawks still trailed 17-12 at the end of the period

 

Second quarter

  • A 5 point Huntingdon swing to open the quarter evened the score at 17 with 8:48 to go until halftime

  • Cassidy Campbell sunk a shot from the midrange to give the Hawks a 19-17 lead at the 7:54 mark

  • A Mountaineer layup evened the score at 22 with 5:47 left until the half, and a triple on their following possession regave Berea the lead 25-22

  • A 5 point scoring run from the Mountaineers extended their lead to 37-30 with 1:41 remaining till halftime

  • A free throw from Kinstin Davis put the Hawks behind 39-31 at the break

 

Third quarter

  • Following a triple from Cassidy Campbell that put the Hawks behind 42-35, the Mountaineers pieced together an 8-0 run to hold a 50-35 lead with 4:20 remaining in the quarter

  • Stifling defense from Berea stalled the Hawk offense, with most of the points coming from Kinstin Davis at the charity stripe in the period

  • Two more free throws from Kinstin Davis put Huntingdon back within 10 at the 2:38 mark in the quarter, but Berea still held a 61-46 lead going into the final quarter

  • The Hawks were outscored 22-15 for the period

 

Fourth quarter

  • Briana McGruder got the Hawks on the board first in the final quarter with 2 free throws to make the score 61-48 with 9:35 to go

  • Over the next couple of minutes, Berea would go on a 14 point tear, extending their lead to 75-48 with 4:55 remaining in the game

  • Payton Corbett stopped the Mountaineer run with a three pointer in the left corner, putting the Hawks behind 75-51

  • Berea would outscore Huntingdon 11-5 for the remainder of the quarter, handing the Hawks a 86-56 loss.

 

Key Notes

  • Berea knocked down 42% of their shots from deep, while the Hawks only cashed in on 25% of their opportunities

  • Huntingdon's bench outscored the Mountaineers' 35-21

  • Huntingdon was outscored 40-14 in the paint.

 

The Hawks look to bounce back on the road at Belhaven on January 16th. Tip off is set for 5:00 PM CT.
