Hawks Handle Business At Wesleyan

MACON, Ga.- In their second matchup of the season, Huntingdon women's basketball (8-13 overall, 5-7 CCS) traveled to Macon and defeated the Wesleyan College Wolves (2-17 overall, 1-10 CCS) 68-48.

 

How it happened

 

First quarter

  • The Hawks got out to a quick 4 point lead, with baskets by Lauryn Lyn and Briana Stuckey fueling the Hawks offense early

  • Wesleyan responded to the Hawks hot start by outscoring Huntingdon 8-5 over the next 3 minutes to reduce the lead to 9-8 at the 4:16 mark

  • Layups from Briana Stuckey and Deshauna Foote closed out the first quarter with the Hawks holding a narrow 13-11 lead

 

Second quarter

  • Wesleyan evened the score at 13 with a jumpshot at the 8:13 mark

  • The Hawks battled back with a 6-0 run courtesy of baskets from Briana McGruder, Kennedy-Ryan Jackson, and Kinstin Davis, extending their lead to 19-13 with 5:53 remaining until halftime

  • The two teams traded baskets to close the half, with layups from Cassidy Campbell and Deshauna Foote being matched by the Wolves in the final minute of the half. Regardless, the Hawks went into halftime with a 25-20 lead

 

Third quarter

  • Huntingdon opened the second half with a 5-0 run, pushing their lead to 30-20 by the 8:03 mark

  • Remaining efficient on offense, the Hawks sparked another 8-0 run concluding with a basket from Kinstin Davis at the 4:34 mark, extending Huntingdon's lead to 40-22

  • Wesleyan calmed the storm with a 5-1 run to end the quarter, still trailing the Hawks 49-34 entering the fourth quarter

 

Fourth quarter

  • Picking up where they left off in the third, Wesleyan opened the final quarter of play scoring the first four points, making the score 49-38 with 8:27 remaining in the game

  • Staying hot, the Hawks went on a 10-0 scoring run over the next few minutes, extending their lead back to 20, 60-40, with 4:12 to go

  • The Wolves tried to battle back, but the Hawks maintained their offensive efficiency to square away the game, leaving Macon with a 68-48 victory.

 

Key Notes

  • The two teams had nearly identical shooting numbers across the board, at 39% for the Hawks and 38% for Wesleyan from the field, 11% for Huntingdon and 10% for Wesleyan from three, and an equal 63% from the free throw line

  • Huntingdon dominated the boards, out rebounding Wesleyan 50-31

  • Huntingdon scored 50 points in the paint
