USA South Decade Athletes of the Week - Week 12 (November 17-23)

From the USA South Athletic Conference

 

In the absence of competition in the fall semester and its postponement to the spring semester, the USA South Athletic Conference will continue selecting athletes of the week. The selections, however, will not be based on current competition but instead the nominees will be those who earned an athlete of the week honor in a particular category within the current week over the past decade. Only athletes from current USA South institutions shall be eligible for selection. On to the Week 12 Decade Athletes of the Week...

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Graham Craig, LaGrange (November 17, 2014) - The senior quarterback from Hoover, Alabama threw for 434 yards with five touchdowns as the Panthers defeated USA South foe Ferrum, 44-28. Craig was 22-of-37 passing for an average of 11.7 yards per attempt. Also Nominated: Michael Lambert, Huntingdon (11/18/19).

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Dwayne Bishop, N.C. Wesleyan (November 17, 2014) - The freshman wide receiver from Murfreesboro, North Carolina totaled 74 yards receiving with one touchdown in a 37-20 loss to USA South foe Huntingdon. Bishop caught four passes for an average of 18.5 yards per catch. Also Nominated: Gerald Hines, Brevard (11/18/19).

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Zach Brownell, Huntingdon (November 17, 2014) - The Prattville, Alabama senior linebacker tallied 12 total tackles, grabbed an interception and broke up one pass as the Hawks defeated USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, 37-20. Brownell notched 11 solo tackles and one assisted take down, including one tackle for loss, in the victory. He now holds the program record for tackles in a single season. Also Nominated: Terrell England, Averett (11/18/19).

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Chase Sams, Greensboro (November 17, 2014) - The Berlin, Maryland freshman linebacker accumulated 14 tackles in a 36-28 victory over USA South rival Averett. Sams tallied nine solo tackles and five assisted take downs, including one tackle for loss, in the win. Also Nominated: Taj Outten, Methodist (11/18/19); Micah Smith, Maryville (11/18/13).

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Brandon Norris, Brevard (November 18, 2019) - The sophomore punt returner from Lumberton, North Carolina returned a third quarter punt 57 yards for a touchdown in a 42-3 victory over USA South foe Greensboro. He also added another punt return for 21 yards en route to averaging 39 yards per punt return. Also Nominated: Jordan Vann, Methodist (11/17/14).

 

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Craig Sabb, Pfeiffer (November 19, 2018) - The sophomore guard from Goose Creek, South Carolina posted a double-double with a career-high 37 points to go along with 11 rebounds in a 135-127 victory over Warren Wilson in the Falcons' only contest. Sabb also dished out five assists, collected one steal and grabbed one block in the win. Also Nominated: Jordan Foote, Piedmont (11/18/19); Torell Carter, Berea (11/20/17); Adrian Moore, N.C. Wesleyan (11/21/16); Chase England, Piedmont (11/23/15); Damian Dixon, Greensboro (11/18/13); Patrick Dugger, LaGrange (11/19/12); Domarius Thomas, N.C. Wesleyan (11/21/11).

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Torell Carter, Berea (November 20, 2017) - The freshman guard from Whitesburg, Kentucky averaged a triple-double of 19.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and 10.5 assists per game as the Mountaineers posted a 2-0 record. In a 68-53 win over Spalding, Carter notched his first career triple-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists. He also added three steals in the victory. In a 97-91 win over Johnson University, Carter tallied a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds to go along with eight assists. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Samm Chandler, Averett (November 21, 2016) - The Burnsville, North Carolina junior guard averaged a double-double of 25.3 points and 15.0 rebounds to go along with 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game as the Cougars posted a 2-1 record. Chandler posted a double-double in each of the three contests. In a 97-90, overtime, win over Emory & Henry, Chandler totaled 27 points, 17 rebounds, six steals, two assists and two blocks. In a 64-63 loss to Virginia Wesleyan, Chandler contributed 17 points, a career-high 18 rebounds and one assist. Finally, in a 79-66 victory over Alvernia, Chandler scored a career-high 32 points while adding ten rebounds and four assists. For her effort at the Mary Washington Hyatt Place Tip-Off, Chandler was named All-Tournament. Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Courtney Carruthers, Maryville (November 18, 2019) - The Maryville, Tennessee freshman guard scored a game-high 38 points off the bench in a 81-71 win over Emory & Henry. Carruthers also added four rebounds, three steals and one assist in the victory. Also Nominated: Hope Franklin, Piedmont (11/19/18); Garis Grant, Agnes Scott (11/21/16); Joanna Smith, Covenant (11/23/15); Jonna Koski, Averett (11/17/14); Mindy Brackins, Maryville (11/18/13); Shanice Miles, Mary Baldwin (11/21/11).
