Huntingdon adds Women’s Flag Football, Names Angela Rowe Head Coach

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon College Athletics has announced the addition of Flag Football and named Angela Rowe as the inaugural Head Coach.

Huntingdon College President, Cameron West, speaks on the addition of Women's Flag Football, "Since our founding in 1854, Huntingdon has been at the forefront of advancing educational opportunities for women, including more recently such athletic programs as Lacrosse, Beach Volleyball, Cross Country, Golf, Track and Field, and Wrestling.  Now, we build on that tradition with the introduction of Women's Flag Football and the hiring of Coach Angela Rowe to recruit the first class of student athletes and build the program.

Coach Rowe's long-time commitment to the sport and her coaching experience make Huntingdon the "go to" institution for young women all over the country who are looking to extend their high school playing careers to the collegiate level.  I was deeply impressed by Coach Rowe during our interview and am grateful to her for accepting our offer to lead this new program.  She will bring expertise, energy, and excitement to campus.  Hawk 'Em!"

The Flag Football team plans to begin competition in the Spring of 2025.

"This is an immeasurable honor, and it is with immeasurable gratitude that I thank Huntingdon College for the opportunity to build a program. And providing a genuine support system that will help foster success. I am excited to join the Huntingdon Community and look forward to developing and cultivating relationships campus-wide," says Coach Rowe.

Rowe joins the Hawks after serving one and a half years at Bethel College in Newton, Kansas where she was the Head Coach of their Flag Football Team. At Bethel she introduced offensive formations, created a playbook, conducted film study, and conducted cross-training for student-athletes. She boosted the team to their first ever win last season against Saint Mary.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Angela comes to Huntingdon after a long coaching career spread out between flag, flex and tackle football. She was a defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Phoenix, a contact football program in Atlanta where she crafted and implemented game plans.

Her playing experience is in flag, flex and tackle football. She also has experience coaching a variety of different levels from middle school all the way up to professional flag and tackle teams.

Beginning in 2006 as the Co-Head Coach at Columbia Middle School, she has earned her way up the chain as the Atlanta Ravens Coach, a women's Semi-Pro team in the IWFL and head coaching positions at Reloaded Flag in Atlanta, Georgia, and SS Flex Football in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

Rowe is a graduate of Western Carolina University where she was a two-sport athlete playing basketball and running track. While at WCU, Angela earned All-American honors in track and field while being an All-Conference basketball player. She currently holds the Southern Conference record for the 400-meter. Angela also earned the MVP at the Naval Academy Basketball Tournament.

When it comes to football honors Angela is not shy of awards as she has earned the Atlanta Xplosion Women's Full Contact Football Iron Women Award, Independent Women's Football League World Champion in 2006 and 2011, USA Football Alternate, and the defensive MVP for the United States Flag and Touch Football Leage.

Along with playing and coaching football, Rowe has been involved in law enforcement in the Atlanta area for the last 23 years.

Athletic Director, Eric Levanda says, "Angela's passion for the game has driven her into the coaching world full-time.  I love her desire to be a part of the sport's growth and you can tell there's fuel inside, when discussing the subject with her. Women's Flag Football's growth is exactly why we connected with her.  This is a sport that has caught fire at the high school level.  It has an inclusiveness that brings young women with different skills and from different walks of life, together.

I am excited to help grow the game for young women who want to continue to play at the NCAA level and who share Angela's passion for it, both in the state of Alabama and in the southeast.  I am excited to work with Angela Rowe and excited to watch her build, teach, and care for our future Huntingdon Hawks Women's Flag Football students."
