Caldwell and Smith Claim Baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week Honors

DECATUR,Ga.- Keeping the Great South Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week Award at Piedmont, the Lions Kevin Caldwell earns the honor for the week ending March 12. Huntingdon's Trey Smith earns his first Player of the Week award after a solid week of play for the Hawks. This is the first time the duo has earned the award this season.

Caldwell pitched arguably his best performance in his career, picking up his 5th win of the season in a legendary win over #1 Marietta College, the reigning NCAA Champs. Caldwell pitched with no run support over seven innings, but was dominant against one of the top offenses in the country. He went seven innings, no earned runs, three hits, three walks and six strikeouts. Piedmont finally got on the board with a four run 7th inning, giving Caldwell the nod as the winning pitcher.

Helping Huntingdon to a 4-0 week, Smith batted .750 (12-for-16) with 11 RBIs, 10 runs, three home runs and three stolen bases in four games this week. Smith was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs and hit a game-winning two-run homer in the top of the ninth in a 7-5 win over Oglethorpe on Tuesday. Against Blackburn, he was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs in Game 1. In Game 2, he was 5-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs and a two-run homer. In the final game of the series, Smith was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs and a three-run homer.

Huntingdon closes out the week with two games against conference competitor Covenant in Montgomery, Ala. Piedmont plays host to Rowan on Thursday night with first pitch at 7 p.m.
