Huntingdon baseball picks up first win of the season

JACKSON, Miss. – The Huntingdon baseball team scored four runs in the first two innings and four runs in the fifth inning to knock off Rhodes College 8-3.

The game was the first of two scheduled games for the Hawks (1-1) on Saturday in the Millsaps College Invitational. The Hawks were also scheduled to play Millsaps. The score and the results for the second game were not available as of Saturday night.

Joseph Odom and Caleb Astin led the Hawks at the plate. Odom drove in three runs on two hits and Astin drove in two runs on two hits.

Odom singled in Astin and Grant Brown in the first inning and hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. Astin singled in Brown and Evan Agnew in the second inning.

Leading 5-1 in the fifth, Jordan Freeman doubled to score Trey Smith. Freeman later scored on a Tyler Blackwell sacrifice fly. Austin White scored the Hawks' final run on a wild pitch.

Freeman finished the game with two hits.

Chris Barrentine (1-0) picked up the win, striking out five, walking two and allowing two hits in six innings.

Huntingdon plays its first home game on Feb. 16, hosting Oglethorpe in a doubleheader. Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.
