Huntingdon baseball rallies past Covenant in 9th inning

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Huntingdon baseball team rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning to knock off Covenant 6-4 on Friday. The win was the fifth straight for the Hawks.

Huntingdon (21-9) scored four runs in the top of the ninth and held Covenant (22-8) to one hit in the bottom of the ninth. Neil Lawler struck out the final batter to end the game.

Trailing 4-2 in the ninth, Keegan Lambeth and Tyler Blackwell led off the inning with singles. Lambeth scored on the first of two Covenant errors in the inning and Blackwell and Evan Agnew both scored on the Scots' second error. Leading 5-4, Trey Smith scored the final run on a Grant Brown RBI.

Joseph Odom drove in the Hawks' first two runs of the game. Odom, who entering the week led all of Division III with 11 home runs and was tied for second with 43 RBIs, hit a solo home run in the first inning and drove in Seth Currie for the Hawks' second run of the game in the sixth inning.

Joseph Fincher (3-2) was credited with the win and Lawler was credited with his fourth save of the season. Fincher, Lawler and starter Cory Belyeu combined for eight strikeouts.

Huntingdon and Covenant will play a doubleheader on Saturday. Game 1 is set for noon.
