MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team lost its first game but won the second game of a doubleheader with Covenant on Saturday.
The Hawks fell 10-8 in Game 1 and won 13-4 in Game 2. Game 1 of the series was rained out on Friday night.
The Hawks (18-13, 8-6 USA South) struggled early on Saturday, falling behind 9-0 in Game 1 before rallying late. Huntingdon used a five-run eighth inning to pull within a run, 9-8, before Covenant (17-14, 7-7 USA South) scored a final run and held off the Hawks in the ninth.
In Game 2, Huntingdon started strong and took a 7-0 lead in the second inning. The Hawks put together 17 hits in the game and pitchers Zach McGrady and Jared Gonzalez combined for 11 strikeouts.
McGrady (5-3) earned the win in six innings, striking out five, walking three and allowing nine hits and three runs. McGrady carried a two-hitter into the fifth inning. Gonzalez pitched the final three innings to earn the save. Gonzalez struck out six, walked two, hit one batter, gave up two hits and allowed one run.
Patrick Kucera and Anthony Spivey powered the Hawks' early offensive outburst in Game 2. Leading 2-0 in the second inning, Kucera singled in two runs and Spivey hit a three-run home run to give the Hawks a seven-run lead.
Spivey finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, four RBIs and two runs and was one of five Hawks with multiple hits. Kucera was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs and Alec Raley was 3-for-4 with two runs. Jordan Criswell had two hits, two RBIs and a run and Josh Jackson had two hits, an RBI and a run.
Gunnar Peters and Josh Hines each had an RBI and a run and Mason Throneberry, Cade Conville and Landon Sessions each scored one run.
In Game 1, Hines provided one of the Hawks' biggest offensive highlights. Trailing 9-4 with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning, Hines hit a three-run double make it a two-run game. Kucera followed with an RBI double to make it 9-8.
Hines finished Game 1 with three RBIs and a run. Criswell was the only Hawk with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Kucera, Coleson Taylor and Cody Shoemaker each had one RBI. Throneberry scored two runs and Raley, Jay Jordan, Sessions and Conville each scored one run.
Zack Watson (4-4) took the loss in Game 1.
Huntingdon returns to Posey Field on Tuesday to play Rhodes at 4 p.m.
