Huntingdon stumbles against Rhodes in Firehouse Classic
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team suffered its first loss of the season with a 10-5 loss to Rhodes College on Friday night.
The game capped the first day of the Firehouse Classic at Posey Field. Methodist defeated Rhodes 10-3 in the first game of the day and Birmingham-Southern beat Methodist 22-11 in the second game.
Weather permitting, two more Firehouse Classic games will be played on Saturday. Huntingdon is scheduled to play Rhodes at 11 a.m. and the Hawks will play Birmingham-Southern at 2 p.m.
Should weather force a change in the schedule, updates will be posted on the Huntingdon athletic website and social media.
In Friday night's loss, Huntingdon fell behind 3-1 in the middle innings. The score stood until the eighth inning when Rhodes scored five runs to take an 8-1 lead. The Lynx went ahead 10-1 in the top of the ninth.
Huntingdon answered with four runs in the bottom of the ninth but could not complete a comeback.
Will Cosby led the Hawks with two RBIs and two doubles on a 3-for-5 night. Cosby stole home to score the Hawks' first run in the sixth inning.
Dakota Beane was 2-for-3 with a run, Taylor Fought had two hits and a run and Garrett Breland had two hits. Wes Powell had an RBI and a run, Jud Owens had one RBI and Corey Lowe scored one run.
Carden Mellown (0-1) took the loss, striking out seven, giving up five hits, walking one and allowing one earned run in five innings.
