Hawks Drop Non-Conference Battle With Birmingham-Southern

MONTGOMERY,Ala.- In their final non-conference game of the season, Huntingdon baseball(15-12 overall, 5-4 CCS) was taken down by the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern College(23-12 overall, 11-7 SAA) 15-7. The Panthers jumped out to an early lead with a strong first inning offensively, and the Hawks could not rally a comeback.

Highlights

  • Birmingham-Southern jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first frame, scoring on four of their five base hits
  • In response, Daniel Phillips scored the Hawks first run off a ground out from Matthew Robinson to put Huntingdon behind 5-1 entering the second inning
  • The Panthers extended their lead to 6-1 in the top frame of the second inning with a RBI double and held the Hawks scoreless to enter the third inning up five
  • After holding BSC scoreless to start the third inning, Noah Phillips singled in the bottom frame to bring home Daniel Phillips and shrink the lead to 6-2
  • The Panthers were able to push their lead to 10-2 entering the bottom of the fourth inning with a two- run homer and a RBI single bringing home two runners
  • Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Panthers hit another strike over the fence to bring the score to 11-2
  • Huntingdon responded in the following frame with Jordan Raley singling to bring home Byron McLain to cut the deficit to 11-3
  • Still hot, the Panthers scored two runs in the opening frame of the seventh inning to push their lead back to 13-3
  • The Hawks kept battling, with Daniel Patton driving a single up the middle to bring home Mikael Bryant to bring the score deficit back to single digits 13-4
  • Following two more Panther runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Hawks responded with three runs to close out the inning. To kick things off, an error from Birmingham-Southern allowed for Christian Lasecki and Jordan Raley to score, which Seth Killam followed with a run to bring the score to 15-7 entering the final inning
  • After holding the Panthers scoreless to start the final inning, Huntingdon could not find any rhythm at the plate, taking a 15-7 loss

On the mound

  • Jable Ramey started the game for the Hawks, allowing five runs on four hits with one strikeout
  • Sam Tompkins replaced Ramey in the second inning, allowing one run on one hit and throwing three strikeouts
  • JB Landrum took the mound in the fourth inning, allowing four runs on two hits with one strikeout
  • Gavin Gomez relieved Landrum, not allowing any hits or runs and throwing three strikeouts
  • Evan Clark took over for Gomez in the fifth inning, allowing allowing three runs on two hits
  • Will Argo subbed into the game in the eighth inning, allowing two runs on one hit
  • Jackson Joiner closed the game for the Hawks, not giving up any runs and one base hit

The Hawks look to bounce back on April 19th, kicking off a conference series against Belhaven. Gametime is scheduled for 6:00 PM CT.
