Huntingdon takes down Maryville in OT

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – Quarterback Landon Cotney scored two touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown in overtime to help the Huntingdon football team get by Maryville 16-13 on Saturday.

The win was Huntingdon's second straight over Maryville. One of the Hawks' oldest rivalries, Huntingdon holds a 12-3 all-time record in the series.

On Saturday, Huntingdon fell behind 3-0 in the first quarter before Cotney scored on a 50-yard run with 46 seconds left in the second quarter. Maryville took a 10-7 lead in the third quarter before the Hawks tied the game on a 20-yard field goal by Will Edwards with two minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

In overtime, Maryville had the first possession and was forced to settle for a 39-yard field goal. Huntingdon answered with four straight runs (2, 8, 10 and 2 yards) by Kahari McReynolds to set up the final play. On second-and-goal at the Maryville 3-yard line, Cotney carried the ball into the end zone to end the game.

Notable Performance: Cotney's two touchdowns provided a big spark for Huntingdon. Before Cotney's 50-yard touchdown run in the final minute of the first half, the Hawks had managed just 80 yards of offense.

Huntingdon finished the game with 365 yards of offense and Cotney helped generate 257 yards. He finished with 167 yards passing and 90 yards rushing.

Defensively, linebacker Casey Peppers became the 13^th Huntingdon player to record at least 15 tackles in a game. Peppers and the defense held Maryville to less than 300 yards of offense (91 yards rushing and 207 yards passing). The 13 points allowed on Saturday are tied for the third fewest against Maryville in the history of the series.

 Did You Know?: Saturday was the ninth overtime game in Huntingdon history and the third against Maryville. The Hawks are 4-5 all-time in overtime games, including 2-1 against the Scots.

The majority of Huntingdon's overtime games were in the early years of the program, with five coming between 2004-2007. Saturday was the first overtime game for the Hawks since 2014.
