Hawks Come From Behind To Defeat Brevard

BREVARD, North Carolina- Huntingdon College Football (7-2 Overall, 5-1 USA South) defeated the Brevard Tornadoes( 5-4 Overall, 5-1 USA South) in a road matchup, 31-27.

 

The Hawks got off to a slow start, ending the first quarter down 21-0. To begin the second quarter however, Huntingdon's offense found their stride with a 37-yard field goal from senior kicker Will Edwards and a two-yard touchdown run from Troy Garner. A short field goal from Brevard would make the score 24-10 going into halftime. The Hawks defense held Brevard to -8 rushing yards in the second quarter.

 

Coming out of halftime, the Hawks continued their strong defensive and special teams play. Following a Hawks punt, linebacker Bailey Huston would recover a muffed punt by the Tornadoes, setting up Kahari McReynolds for a 4-yard touchdown run to make the score 24-17. Brevard would capitalize on a Huntingdon interception to extend their lead to 27-17 with 6:25 left in the third quarter, but this would be their last score of the game.

 

On the following possession, a 24-yard strike from Carson Daniel to Kahari McReynolds put the Hawks in striking position going into the fourth quarter. Troy Garner would find the endzone for the second time of the day on a 2-yard touchdown run to bring the Hawks within 3, 27-24. 

 

Continuing his strong play this season, senior linebacker Ty Brown would sack the Brevard Quarterback, forcing a fumble that Hagen Rouse would recover at the 11:16 point in the fourth quarter.. Huntingdon's offense capitalized on the Tornadoes turnover with a 16-yard touchdown run from Kahari McReynolds giving the Hawks their first lead of the day 31-27 with 9:49 left in the game. On the following possession, senior linebacker Ty Martinez intercepted a Brevard pass, giving the Hawks control of the ball with 6:29 left. Following a Huntingdon punt, the Hawks defense would force another 3-and-out, allowing the Hawks to run out the clock with 3:29 remaining, giving the Hawks the victory. The Hawks outscored the Tornadoes 21-3 in the second half.

 

After the game, Head Coach Mike Turk stated that "I am really proud of our guys for sticking together and continuing to believe in each other. We got down early, but continued to scratch and claw until we got back into it. I felt like if we could score the first points of the second half it would be huge, and we did. These guys amaze me- they just seem to always find a way. Today was a credit to their character individually and to our culture as a whole."

The Hawks resume action on Saturday, November 11th, where they host the NC Wesleyan Battling Bishops at 1:00 PM CT for Senior Day.
