McLean named USA South Rookie of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Freshman Brandon McLean was named a USA South Athlete of the Week on Monday.

McLean, who is a native of Ellenwood, Ga., was named Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the second time this season for his performance against Sewanee and Belhaven.

In Tuesday night's rematch against Sewanee, McLean scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds as the Hawks tied the series record 1-1 with a 73-68 win.

Against Belhaven, McLean was held to five points, but added nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in an 84-80 double overtime win.

McLean is averaging 6.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season. He is second in the USA South with 17 blocks.

Huntingdon returns to action in the Oglethorpe Holiday Tournament on December 20 against Regis College. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
TJ Cox, Covenant - The senior guard from Charlotte, North Carolina scored a career-high 34 points in a 96-81 victory over Birmingham Southern in the team's only contest last week. Cox was 10-of-16 from the field including 6-of-8 from three point territory. He added three assists and one rebound in the win. Also Nominated: Charles Bryant, Averett; Chris Meeks, Piedmont; Mark Wagner, LaGrange; Andre Ashley, Huntingdon; D.J. Weaver, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Brandon McLean, Huntingdon - The Ellenwood, Georgia freshman center averaged 7.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game as the Hawks posted a 2-0 record last week. In a 73-68 win over Sewanee, McLean posted ten points, four rebounds and one assist. In an 84-80, double overtime, win over Belhaven, McLean totaled five points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Also Nominated: Austin DeLucia, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Mary Kate Rushton, Piedmont - The Gainesville, Georgia senior post notched a double-double with 22 points and ten rebounds in a 72-67, overtime, victory over USA South foe Huntingdon in the team's only contest last week. Rushton hit a game-tying three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining to force the extra period. She also added one steal and one block in the win. Also Nominated: Allyson Freiermuth, Maryville; Kamerin Williams, Greensboro; Juliette Harp, Huntingdon; Jasmine Canady, Methodist.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Abbey Craven, Piedmont - The Cleveland, Georgia freshman post scored a career-high 15 points in a 72-67, overtime, victory over USA South foe Huntingdon in the team's only contest last week. Craven also added six rebounds and one assist in the win. Also Nominated: Da Jah Joyner, Greensboro; Joanna Smith, Covenant; Alexia Hines, Methodist.
