McLean earns third USA South Rookie of the Week honor

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon freshman Brandon McLean was named a USA South Athlete of the Week on Monday. This is the third time McLean has earned Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week honors this season.

The 6-foot-7 McLean was recognized for his performances in an 82-78 win over Mount St. Vincent and an 80-71 loss to Oglethorpe. The Ellenwood, Ga., native recorded a double-double in each game, averaging 10.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in the two games.

McLean had 10 points, a season-high 11 rebounds and a block in the win against Mount St. Vincent and a season-high 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Oglethorpe.

For the season, McLean is averaging 7.5 points per game, is second on the team with 7.1 rebounds per game and has a team-high 21 blocks in 10 games. McLean is second in the USA South in blocks and sixth in the conference in rebounds per game this season.

Huntingdon (6-4) returns to action on Saturday at Covenant. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. Central.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Parris Scales, Greensboro - The senior forward from Greensboro, North Carolina averaged 18.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.8 blocks per contest over the winter break as the Pride posted a 3-1 record. In a 92-87 win over Dickinson, Scales notched a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four blocks, two assists and two steals. In a 101-62 victory over Pitt.-Greensburg, Scales tallied a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds with four assists, one steal and one block. In a 91-78 loss to Campbellsville, Scales totaled 21 points, seven rebounds, one steal and one block. Finally, in a 74-69 victory over Bridgewater, Scales scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, collected three steals, dished out one assist and blocked one shot. Also Nominated: Justyn Olson, LaGrange; Andre Ashley, Huntingdon; Trevor West, Averett; Adrian Moore, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Brandon McLean, Huntingdon - The Ellenwood, Georgia freshman center averaged a double-double of 10.5 points and 10.5 rebounds as the Hawks posted a 1-1 record over the winter break. In an 82-78 victory over Mt. St. Vincent, McLean notched a double-double of ten points and 11 rebounds to go along with one block. In an 80-71 loss to Oglethorpe, McLean tallied a double-double of 11 points and ten rebounds. Also Nominated: Zedric Barnett, Greensboro; Austin DeLucia, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Kemani Crawford, Ferrum - The Staunton, Virginia senior forward averaged 18.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.7 steals, 1.3 assists and 1.0 blocks per contest as the Panthers posted a 2-1 record over the winter break. In an 83-78 win over Bridgewater, Crawford scored a career-high 30 points to go along with six rebounds, one assist and one steal. In a 78-62 win over USA South rival Averett, Crawford tallied 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Finally, in a 73-56 loss to John Carroll, Crawford totaled six points, four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist. Also Nominated: Samm Chandler, Averett; Alexis Hite, Greensboro; Kenyata Harris, N.C. Wesleyan.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Bryanna Stanton, Greensboro - The Durham, North Carolina freshman guard scored a career-high 16 points in an 84-76 loss to Randolph-Macon in the team's only contest over the winter break. Stanton also added three rebounds in the defeat. Also Nominated: Alixis Roccia, Averett; Jermaiyah Baker, N.C. Wesleyan.
