Huntingdon remains tied for 2nd in West Division of USA South

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The Huntingdon men's basketball team played from behind early but took control in the second half and beat Pfeiffer University 87-73 on Sunday.

With the win, Huntingdon remains tied for second in the West Division of the USA South Athletic Conference. The Hawks have an 8-8 conference record with two conference games remaining. Covenant leads the West Division with an 11-5 conference record and Piedmont is tied with Huntingdon at 8-8.

In Sunday's game, Pfeiffer led early before Huntingdon took the lead for good in the second half. The first 25 minutes of the game provided 10 ties and 11 lead changes.

The final lead change came with 15:05 left in the game on a 3-pointer by Aaron Washington. The Hawks took a 53-50 lead on Washington's 3 and would not trail again. But the game was not decided until the final 10 minutes.

Leading 62-58 with 11 minutes to play, Huntingdon scored six straight points to take a 10-point lead, with 9:51 to play. The Hawks led by at least eight points for the remainder of the game and led by as many as 14 points twice in the final six minutes.

Damien Madison led the Hawks with 24 points and seven rebounds. Madison was 7-for-11 from the field and 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.

James Harris finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Harris was also 7-for-11 from the field. Washington added 12 points and five rebounds and Caleb Toney had 10 points and five rebounds.

Huntingdon trailed for most of the first half, falling behind by eight points in the first three minutes of the game. Huntingdon took its first lead of the game on a 3 by Washington with 7:14 left in the first half.

The two teams would trade leads for the remainder of the first half with neither team leading by more than three points during that span. At the half, Huntingdon trailed 39-37.

The pattern continued for the first five minutes of the second half before the Hawks began to take control.
