Hawks Earn Win on Senior Day Against Covenant

Montgomery, Alabama – The Hawks, now 2-22 overall and 1-11 in the CCS defeated the Scots of Covenant (9-16 overall, 5-7 CCS) on senior day with a score of 71-66 and earned their first win in the CCS.

 

The Hawks honored senior, Sam Page, our Huntingdon College SAAC President, before tip-off tonight for all his hard work on and off the court during his four years at Huntingdon.

 

Covenant took the first lead of the game and held it for three minutes until a three pointer by Nate Johns lifted the Hawks up 7-4. The Scots again claimed another lead change after a made layup under the 15 minute mark. Back to back threes from freshman, Rashawn Knox lifted the Hawks up by two (13-11) but Covenant would be able to answer with triples of their own to take a five point lead with 10 minutes remaining in the half (19-14). A pair of made free-throws by DaQuan Hawkins left Huntingdon down by four before the Scots began an 11-2 run in three minutes. Traded baskets claimed the last three minutes of the first half as Covenant held a ten point lead on the Hawks (39-29).

The Hawks shot 24% from the field while Covenant shot 57%

Huntingdon shot 10 more free throws than the Scots and made 9 more

Max Gardner led the team with 11 points

 

A 7-0 run that ended with a layup from leading scorer Max Gardner left the Hawks down three at the start of the second half (39-36). Both teams went bucket for bucket until a layup from Knox claimed the Huntingdon lead (46-44). Another lead change occurred at the eight minute mark that kept the game within one possession until there were two minutes left of the clock. Gardner's 14 rebounds with his second double-double of the season lead the Hawks in their defensive stops down the stretch that forced the Scots to foul. Huntingdon made their way to the free-throw line multiple times in the last minute to secure the win for their final regular season game.
