Hawks Defeated by Centre on Day 2 of LaGrange Tournament

LAGRANGE,Ga.- In day two of the LaGrange tournament, Huntingdon men's basketball (2-3 overall), was defeated by the Colonels of Centre College (1-3 overall) 87-81.

 

Highlights 

 

First Half

  • Centre striked first, scoring a layup off of an offensive rebound to open the scoring 2-0 at the 18:14 mark, but a three pointer from Jaylen Washington on the following possession gave Huntingdon an early lead 3-2.

  • With 17:43 remaining in the half, Washington knocked down his second triple of the game, pushing the Hawks lead to 6-2.

  • A 13-1 scoring run from the Colonels put them ahead 15-9 with 13:45 remaining in the half

  • A layup at the 9:25 mark extended the Centre lead to double digits, putting them ahead of the Hawks 22-12.

  • With 8:03 remaining, Jaylen Washington made his third three point shot of the half, bringing the Hawks back within double digits at 24-15.

  • The Colonels responded to Washington's triple with a 9-0 run, putting them ahead 32-15 with 5:40 remaining in the half.

  • Another three point shot from Washington put the Hawks down 34-23 with 3:28 remaining in the half.

  • Huntingdon closed the period on a 4-1 run, trailing Centre 42-31 going into intermission.

 

Second Half

  • To begin the half, the two teams traded buckets with Randall Davis scoring 4 of the first 6 Huntingdon points, resulting in the Hawks trailing 48-37 with 16:17 remaining

  • A Colonel three point shot with 13:08 remaining in the game gave Centre their second  biggest lead of the game, 57-41.

  • Two free throws from Myles Murphy put the Hawks back within 12, 70-58, with 4:43 remaining in the game.

  • With 2:46 remaining, a layup from BJ Brown put the Hawks back within single digits, trailing 74-66.

  • With 1:06 to go in the game, an and-1 from Max Gardner put the Hawks within 5, making the score 79-74.

  • In the final moments of the game, BJ Brown sank a three pointer, but it was all for not, as the Hawks ran out of time with a final score of 87-81.

 

Key Notes 

  • Centre outscored the Hawks in the paint 40-32

  • Huntingdon turned the ball over 16 times to the Colonels 9

  • Centre shot 27/35 from the free throw line, while the Hawks made 25 of their 31 attempts.
