The Hawks Take Down Covenant On Senior Day

MONTGOMERY,Ala.- Huntingdon men's basketball (10-13 overall, 4-6 CCS) took down the Covenant Scots (4-19 overall, 0-10 CCS) 77-65 on Senior Day.

 

Prior to the start of the game, the 3 men's basketball seniors were recognized for their hard work and contributions to the program, both off and on the court.

 

The 2023-2024 seniors were:

#2 Max Gardner

#5 Austin Linville

#14 Caleb Boone

 

How it happened

 

First half

  • Caleb Boone got the first points of the game for the Hawks on a catch and shoot three in the corner

  • Following three points from Covenant, Austin Linville responded with a triple of his own, giving the Hawks a 6-5 lead at the 16:53 mark

  • Nate Johns battled the Covenant offensive attack scoring 8 consecutive points on his own. His efforts evened the score at 14 with 11:30 to go until halftime

  • A 5-0 Covenant run gave the Scots a 19-15 lead at the 9:58 mark

  • Nate Johns threw down a slam to give Huntingdon back the lead 20-19 at the 7:25 mark

  • A 6-0 Scot run out Covenant ahead 26-20 with 5 and a half minutes remaining in the half

  • The Hawks responded with a 7-0 run, taking a 27-26 lead with 4 minutes left in the half

  • 6 more points from Johns put Huntingdon ahead 33-28 at the 1:55 mark

  • A jumper from BJ Brown kept the Hawks ahead 38-34 at the halfway point

 

Second half

  • Covenant opened the second half with a 4-0 run, evening the score at 38 at the 17:58 mark

  • After trading baskets over the next possessions, the score was even at 45 with 12:46 to go

  • A 9-2 Huntingdon run courtesy of good free throw shooting put the Hawks up 54-47 with 8:45 left in the game

  • Nate Johns continued to score at will, giving the Hawks a 64-53 lead at the 4:16 mark with an and-1

  • Up 67-61 with 2 minutes remaining, the Hawks closed the game on a 10-4 run, with a slam from Max Gardner icing the game away, giving Huntingdon a 77-65 victory

 

Key Notes

  • The Hawks shot 45% from the field

  • Huntingdon outrebounded the Scots 38-30

  • Largely in part thanks to Nate Johns, the Hawks bench provided 50 of their 77 points

  • All three seniors scored on their senior day

  • #3 Nate Johns- Career high 35 points, 10 rebounds off the bench

  • #4 BJ Brown- 18 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds

 

The Hawks travel to Jackson, Mississippi to take on Belhaven on February 14th. Tip off is set for 5:30 PM CT.
