Huntingdon’s Lester four strokes off the lead at Callaway Gardens

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Huntingdon senior Jamey Lester shot a 1-over-par 73 on Saturday and is four strokes out of first after the opening round of the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate.

As a team, the Hawks are in 10th in the 16-team field entering Sunday's final round at the Mountain View Golf Club. Huntingdon shot 312 on Saturday in its first competition of the spring.

"The long cold winter definitely played a factor in today's play as the boys were rusty," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "Jamey Lester looked like the seasoned player he is, but even his good play couldn't rally the troops. We're hoping to bounce back in the second round."

Methodist leads the team standings at 293, Oglethorpe is second at 294 and LaGrange is third at 297. Methodist's Dakun Chang and Washington & Lee University's Conley Hurst are tied for first at 3-under 69.

Behind Lester, senior Rodes Bowers shot 78 for Huntingdon, senior Griffin Just shot 80, junior Steven Smith shot 81 and sophomore David James shot 82.

Playing as individuals, freshman Will Thrash shot 82, sophomore Justin Nolen shot 85 and freshman Taylor Buckholtz shot 89.
