Mathers and Shephard in 1st and 2nd as Hawks extend team lead in conference tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's golf team extended its lead and all five Huntingdon golfers are within eight strokes of first after the first two rounds of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

The second-ranked Hawks have a 17-stroke lead entering Saturday's final round at Highland Country Club.

Huntingdon junior Drew Mathers and senior Stephen Shephard are first and second entering the final round, senior Mark Connelly is tied for seventh and senior Henry Gee and freshman Carson Whitton are tied for 11th. Four of the five Hawks shot par-or-better in the second round with three golfers recording rounds in the 60s.

Huntingdon shot a 9-under-par 279 in the second round and leads the nine-team field with a 20-under 556 after two rounds. The Hawks shot an 11-under 277 in Thursday's first round.

The 277 tied for the program's second best single round of the NCAA era. The Hawks' two-round 556 is the second best two-round total for the Hawks during the NCAA era and is five strokes off the program record.

With one round to play, Methodist is second with a 3-under 573 and North Carolina Wesleyan is third with a 7-over 583.  

Mathers, the second-ranked golfer in Division III, and Shephard, the third-ranked golfer in Division III, each shot 3-under 69 on Friday. The two golfers each have 17 rounds of par-or-better this season, setting a new NCAA-era single-season record for the Hawks.

Mathers, who shot a 5-under 67 in the first round, leads the field with an 8-under 136 after 36 holes. Shephard, who shot a 3-under 69 in the opening round, is two strokes back at 6-under 138.

Connelly is seven strokes off the lead and tied for seventh with a 1-under 143. After shooting a 3-under 69 in the first round, Connelly shot a 2-over 74 on Friday.

One stroke behind Connelly, Gee and Whitton are tied for 11th at even-par 144. After shooting a 3-over 75 in the first round, Gee fired a 3-under 69 in the second round. Whitton shot an even-par 72 in both rounds.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the final round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday.
