Huntingdon in 2nd, three Hawks in top-13 after Rd. 1 of NCAA Tournament

WHEELING, W.V. – The Huntingdon men's golf team turned in a solid performance on Tuesday during the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.

The third-ranked Hawks shot 9-over-par 289 on the Palmer Course at Oglebay and are in second, three strokes behind sixth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. Illinois Wesleyan shot 6-over 290 on the Speidel Jones Course and leads the 37-team field. Twelfth-ranked St. John's (Minn.) is third with a 15-over 299 on the Jones Course.

Entering Wednesday's second round, all three USA South teams in the tournament are in the top-four. Behind Huntingdon, top-ranked Methodist and fourth-ranked Piedmont are tied for fourth at 16-over.

Huntingdon's Walker Hinds, Grant Gronka and Carson Whitton are all in the top-13 and within three strokes of first after one round. Hinds and Gronka both shot 1-over 71 on Tuesday and are tied for eighth. Whitton shot 2-over 72 and is tied for 13th.

Webster's Will Hocker, Illinois Wesleyan's Jimmy Morton and St. John's (Minn.) Glavine Schugel each shot 1-under on Tuesday and are tied for first.  

Huntingdon's Peter Meilunas shot 5-over 75 in the first round and is tied for 48th. Owen Burt shot 8-over 78 and is tied for 92nd.

                       

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Wednesday.
