FERRUM, Va. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team opened the season with a 10-5 loss at Ferrum College on Sunday.
Huntingdon senior Brandon Sewell scored the game's first two goals midway through the first quarter. Ferrum (1-0) answered with four straight goals and led 4-2 at the half.
Huntingdon (0-1) cut it to 4-3 early in the third quarter on another goal by Sewell. Ferrum led 6-4 at the start of the fourth quarter and pulled ahead with four goals in the final quarter.
Sewell led the Hawks with three goals and five ground balls. Davis Dalton and Kendrick Ballard each had one goal. Dalton and LaDarius Williams each recorded an assist. Brandon Scheele finished with seven ground balls and won five faceoffs.
Goalies Fabien Gutierrez and Kristian Smith combined for seven saves and 10 goals allowed. Gutierrez started the game and had one save and five goals allowed. Smith played the final 40:57 and had six saves and five goals allowed.
"We didn't handle their pressure very well and didn't hit our shots. Ferrum did a good job," Huntingdon head coach Andrew Carey said. "We need to turn the page, improve and handle our business to assure we see them again in the conference tournament."
Huntingdon returns to action on Wednesday at Millsaps College at 6 p.m.
