Hastings sets assist record in rout over Dallas

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Senior Karson Hastings recorded four assists in Sunday's 21-1 win over Dallas to become the Hawks career assist leader.

Hastings now has 69 career assists, breaking assistant coach Brandon Sewell's (2012-15) record of 68. For the season, Hastings has 21 assists, four away from his own record set last season. 

The Hawks (6-6) scored five goals in the first, second and third quarters and finished the game with six goals in the fourth.  Huntingdon had 10 different goal scorers and 12 players with at least one point. The 32 points (21 goals, 11 assists) recorded by Huntingdon is the second highest performance by the Hawks since a 33 point outing against Centenary in 2015

The one goal allowed by the Hawks defense ties the fewest goals allowed by a Huntingdon team. The Hawks allowed one goal to Alma in 2013.

Huntingdon jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Dallas (2-6) scored its only goal of the game late in the second quarter. The Hawks closed the game with an 11-0 run.

Brandon Scheele scored the game's first goal in the first minute of play. Miles Stading found the back of the net just over four minutes later before Kendrick Ballard scored a pair of goals to give Huntingdon a 4-0 lead with 2:18 remaining in the opening quarter.  Austen Saucier closed the quarter with his only goal of the game to extend the advantage to 5-0.

In the second quarter, Zach Barnhill, Mac Puller, Jackson Schrampfer, Stading and Scheele each scored to put the Hawks ahead 10-0. Dallas scored with 10 seconds remaining in the half to cut the advantage to nine heading into halftime.

Schrampfer led the Hawks with five points off two goals and three assists. Scheele and Austin Ohliger each had four goals.

Matt Murphy started the game in goal for the Huntingdon and recorded three saves in just under 21 minutes of play. Stephen Dan finished the game for the Hawks and had eight saves while allowing one goal.

Scheele started the third quarter with a goal in the first 44 seconds with an assist from Hastings. Schrampfer and Ohliger added goals before Hastings found Zach Barnhill and Ohliger to tie and set the assist record. The Hawks led 15-1 going into the final frame.

Ohliger scored 30 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Huntingdon a 16-1 lead. After a Huntingdon penalty, Tannor Smoot scored a man-down goal before scoring a man-up goal just under two minutes later. Huntingdon closed out the scoring with 5:13 remaining in the game to take the win.

Stading finished with two goals and one assist while Barnhill, Ballard and Smoot each had two goals. Cameron Glisson and Saucier each had one goal and one assist.

Glisson went 9-for-14 at the faceoff x and collected seven ground balls. Sam Hitt had one assist and won four faceoffs and had three ground balls.  

Huntingdon travels to Brevard on Saturday to begin its Spring Break trip. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
