Huntingdon softball looking for strong showing in GSAC tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon seniors Aleah Payne and Bree Giordana want to make this weekend count. As two of six seniors on the Huntingdon softball team, they want to make their final Great South Athletic Conference tournament one to remember.

"This is the last chance for our class," said Payne, this year's GSAC Player of the Year. "We want to go out on a good note. We want to leave a legacy behind and raise the bar a little for next year's team."

The Lady Hawks reached the GSAC championship game last season and were just one win away from the conference title. Instead, Huntingdon lost to Piedmont and finished as conference runner-up.

The losses still sting, but they also serve as motivation. When the GSAC tournament gets underway on Friday in Maryville, Tenn., the Lady Hawks will be focused.

"The girls have been determined since we walked out on the field the first day of the season," Huntingdon head coach and GSAC Coach of the Year Gynger Williams said. "The girls are dedicated this season. They want it and it shows."

Top-seeded Huntingdon (25-13) will play the winner of LaGrange (13-21) and Agnes Scott (17-13) on Friday in the first round at 1:30 p.m. Central.

"I've never been on a team that was so unified for one goal," said Giordana, a two-time GSAC Pitcher of the Year. "Everyone on the team is focused on the conference tournament. This is it for (the seniors). It's all or nothing."
