Softball splits with Methodist, earns 5th seed for conference tournament

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball team dropped Game 1 but bounced back to win Game 2 on Sunday at Methodist.
After losing 10-2 in five innings, the Lady Hawks responded with an 8-0 win in the second game. With the win in Game 2, Huntingdon (18-15, 13-10) clinched the fifth seed in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.
The loss knocked Methodist (19-19, 13-11) out of contention. Four teams (Greensboro, Piedmont, North Carolina Wesleyan and Methodist) finished with a 13-11 conference record and were vying for the final three spots in the conference tournament.
Following the USA South's procedures for tie-breakers, the Monarchs did not make the cut. Huntingdon will play No. 4 seed LaGrange in the opening round of the conference tournament on Friday at 8 a.m. (Central) in Rocky Mount, N.C.
In the deciding Game 2 on Sunday, senior Katy Messick (11-6) pitched a complete-game shutout for Huntingdon. Messick struck out eight, walked five and allowed just three hits in seven innings. She was also 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run.
Heather McGuirk was 3-for-4 with a RBI in the second game, Ashley Johnson had one RBI and one run and Tiffany Taylor and Kala Rooney each scored two runs. Brandi Blair and Jessica Swindle each had one RBI and Chelsea Messer and Gabby Alcantar each scored one run.
In Game 1, Daisha Henderson hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning to score Messer and Johnson. Blair had two hits and was the only Huntingdon player with multiple hits.
