Huntingdon splits with Mount St. Joseph and Berry to close weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The Huntingdon softball team closed the weekend with a split against Mount St. Joseph and Berry College on Sunday.

The Hawks beat Mount St. Joseph 4-0 and lost to Berry 10-3. Huntingdon finished the weekend with a 1-1 record against both teams. The Hawks defeated Berry 8-0 in five innings on Saturday and lost to Mount St. Joseph 7-4 on the first day.

Freshman Michaela Denney led the Hawks during the weekend with five hits, six RBIs and two runs in the four games. Annie Nolan, Hannah Sims and Mollie Singleterry each had four hits during the weekend.

In Sunday's win over Mount St. Joseph, Huntingdon scored two runs in the first inning and two runs in the sixth inning. A one-run triple by Lydia Lewis and a one-run double by Sims gave Huntingdon a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. A sacrifice bunt by Sydney Conville and a one-run single by Denney scored the Hawks' final two runs in the sixth inning.

Denney and Lewis each finished the game with an RBI and a run. Sims and Conville each had one RBI and Emily Nieuwstraten and Nolan each scored one run.

Madison Hunt (3-0) pitched a complete-game shutout. Hunt struck out three, gave up seven hits and did not issue a walk.

In Sunday's loss to Berry, Huntingdon only trailed 4-3 after five innings. But the Vikings pulled away with five runs in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh inning.

Nolan was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, Denney was 2-for-4 with a run, Singleterry was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Emma Spurlin was 2-for-2 with a run and Conville had one RBI.

Katie Clifton (0-1) took the loss in five innings.
