Huntingdon earns conference sweep against LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga.  – The Huntingdon softball team swept LaGrange in a conference doubleheader on Friday.

The Hawks won the first game 5-3 and won the second game 8-5 in eight innings.

Emily Nieuwstraten, Brooke Stefankiewicz and Hannah Vines combined for 10 of Huntingdon's 17 hits, eight runs and five RBIs in the doubleheader. Nieuwstraten was 4-for-6 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs. Stefankiewicz had three hits and five runs and Vines had three hits and two RBIs.

In Game 1, Huntingdon led 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning when Nieuwstraten hit a two-run home run to give Huntingdon a three-run lead.

Nieuwstraten was 3-for-3 with the home run, two RBIs and two runs. Vines had two hits and two RBIs and Stefankiewicz had two runs and two stolen bases. Macie Wilson had one RBI and Nevaeh McIntyre scored one run.

Lauren Melton (6-8) pitched a complete game to earn the win in Game 1. Elise Maddox (4-6) earned the win in Game 2 in six innings of relief.

In Game 2, Huntingdon rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. LaGrange tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

In the eighth inning, Sydney Conville drove in Annie Nolan to give Huntingdon a one-run lead. Conville, Stefankiewicz and Emma Bauer later scored on an error to make it an 8-4 game. LaGrange added one run in the bottom of the eighth before Huntingdon ended the game.  

Stefankiewicz had two hits and three runs in Game 2 and Bauer scored two runs. Nieuwstraten and Conville each had one RBI and one run, Anna Vaughn drove in one run and Nolan scored one run.

Coming Up: Huntingdon plays at Brevard on Sunday in a doubleheader. Game 1 is set for 11 a.m. (Central).
