Hawks Sweep Sewanee in Season Opener

Montgomery, Alabama – The Hawks, now 2-0 overall defeated The University of the South (1-3 overall), in a double header with a score of 7-1 in game one and 8-0 in game two.

Game 1:

The Hawks defense stepped up early as they got the first three Tiger batters out, as Holy Sharp got the start in the season opener. With a single from Bailey Murphy to right field Huntingdon hit the board first as Murphy batted in Natalie Ritchey (1-0). The second inning claimed scoreless for both teams as they each only added one hit each. In the third, the Hawks leading batter for the game, Jordan Holman who went 3 of 4 doubled to center field and sent Madison Salzman and Maddie Grace Hubbard home (3-0). Scoring two more runs in the bottom of the 4th and 5th the Hawks looked to create distance. In the bottom of the sixth Holman again stepped up to bring in two more runners after a single to left field which brought the score to 7-0. The Tigers were able to add a point to the board after a single to center field in the seventh inning, but it would not be enough to overcome the Hawks.

 

Game One Notes:

Holly Sharp earned her first win and pitched a complete game only allowing five hits and one run

Freshman Maddie Grace Hubbard went 3 of 3 from the plate and scored two runs

Jordan Holman had 4 RBIs going 3 of 4

 

Game 2:

With Huntingdon scoring in every inning but the fourth, the Hawks pitching staff continued to shut the Sewanee offense down again in game two. With a score of 2-0 heading into the second Crimson Wells continued to keep Sewanee scoreless with only allowing one hit in her two innings. Kate Holcombe stepped in the circle for the Hawks to start the third inning up 4-0 on the Tigers. Three runs in the third that began with Jordan Holman's double to left field and ended with Natalie Ritchey's single to short stop gave the Hawks the advantage. Holcombe shut out the first three batters of the fifth inning to give the Hawks one last at bat where Hubbard singled to center field to bring in Brooke Stefankiewicz and top the Tigers 8-0.

 

 Game Two Notes:

Kate Holcombe earned her first season win in the circle pitching three innings and allowing no hits

Natalie Ritchey led the Hawks at the plate going 3 of 4

 

 

The Hawks return to Lucinda Cannon Field on Sunday February 12th, at 1 and 3 PM CST to take on Millsaps.
