Hawks Softball Splits with #5 Berry

Montgomery, Alabama - Huntingdon (16-4 overall) split with #5 Berry (15-4 overall) in their doubleheader home contest.

Game 1: Huntingdon 3 – Berry 2

Starting in the circle for the Hawks, senior Crimson Wells held the Vikings to no runs and three hits before she was relieved by Brooke Cooper in the fourth after Huntingdon went up by one from a sacrifice fly by Maddie Grace Hubbard to score Natalie Ritchey.

Aubree Flanagan and Holly Sharp pitched in the seventh inning as Berry began to find a rhythm scoring two runs off of two singles to take the lead.

With two outs and no runners on base Brooke Stefankiewicz stepped up to the plate and singled off of a bunt to first base. Hubbard was then walked by the Vikings pitcher and Jordan Holman singled to center field to bring in Stefankiewicz and tie the game at two. Senior Bailey Murphy hit a single to secure the walk off win as Hubbard crossed the plate for the Hawks to defeat #5 ranked Berry in game one.

Game 2: Huntingdon 5 – Berry 6

A one run single from the Vikings gave them the early lead in game two at the top of the third inning before starting pitcher, Katelyn Holcombe was relieved by Brooke Cooper. Another Berry run was scored in the fourth inning and the Hawks looked to make a comeback.

Huntingdon searched for a big fifth inning after Crimson Wells replaced Cooper in the circle and shutout the Vikings. The Hawks took the plate and a single from Dani Holt put the Hawks on base. Miranda Treadway advanced the runner to second after she was walked. Freshman, Elli Lorance pinch hit for Kamryn Miller and she laid down a bunt to advance the runners to scoring position. Natalie Ritchey singled and the Hawks found themselves with bases loaded and two outs. 

A passed ball from Berry scored a Hawks run and advanced the baserunners (2-1). Hubbard singled to bring in Ritchey and tie the game at two. First baseman, Bailey Murphy's two run single put the Hawks in the lead at 4-2 and the Hawks added one more run to go up by three before heading to the sixth inning (5-3). 

Berry was able to tie the game in the top of the sixth and in the seventh neither team was able to score a run which forced an extra inning. 

With a runner placed on second base, she advanced on a passed ball to third and a sacrifice fly to right field scored the final run for Berry. The Hawks were unable to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth as they fell to the Vikings.

The Hawks return to action for their first conference game at Maryville on the 25th of March at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM CST.
