Piedmont Sweeps Huntingdon in Final Regular Season Contests

DEMOREST, Ga. --- Huntingdon College's men's and women's basketball teams each fell to Piedmont College in their final regular season contest. The Lady Hawks were outscored 80-47 in the first game, while Huntingdon's men fell by seven points, 87-80, to the Lions.

In the first game of the day, junior Whitney Toole's jumper with 19:23 in the opening period gave the Lady Hawks their only lead, 2-0. Piedmont quickly tied and took the lead never looking back in the, 80-47, win over Huntingdon.

The Lady Lions entered halftime with a 34-21 lead, before outscoring Huntingdon 46-26 in the final period of the contest. Piedmont led by double digits the entire second half securing their final Great South Athletic Conference regular season contest.

Piedmont shot 42.6 percent (29-of-68) to Huntingdon's 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field. The Lady Lions dominated the glass 54-34 over the Lady Hawks on Saturday.

Toole paced the Lady Hawks (9-16, 4-10 GSAC) with 11 points while sophomore Devin Douglas added 8 points. Senior Ashton Salter grabbed a team-high seven boards in the conference loss.

The Lady Lions (17-8, 11-3 GSAC) were led by Lauren Hamel with a game-high 16 points in Piedmont's 17th victory of the season.

The Lady Hawks travel back to Demorest, Ga. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, for a play-in game to the GSAC championships against Piedmont at 6 p.m. Eastern. The conference championships will be played on Feb. 25-26 at Huntingdon's Roland Arena.

In the final contest of the afternoon, Huntingdon's men's basketball team (10-14, 2-4 GSAC) controlled the lead until 9:26 left in regulation. Piedmont's Josh Haymore sank a 3-pointer, 62-59, giving the Lions their first lead since 19:19 in the opening half. The Lions 9-0 run gave them the lead for good and its third GSAC win of the seaon, 87-80.

The Hawks outscored the Lions 32-26 in the first half, but Piedmont's offense woke up and scored 61 points in the final half for the win. Piedmont shot 25-of-54 (46.3 percent) compared to Huntingdon's 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field. Huntingdon only trailed Piedmont by three in the rebound category, 37-34, in the loss on Saturday.

Senior Deshaun Williams posted a game-high 20 points in Huntingdon's seven point loss. Seniors Adrian Williams and Ephriam Hudson added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Junior Jacob Moody recorded a game-high eight rebounds against the Lions.

Piedmont had five players score double figures, including Haymore's team-high 16 points.

Huntingdon returns to action for the GSAC championships next week February 25-26 at Huntingdon's Roland Arena. The Hawks will take on No. 2 seed Piedmont College on Friday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Roland Arena. Live stats will be available at http://fs.huntingdon.edu/livestats/xlive.htm.
