Women’s basketball falls to Averett

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team came back from a first-half deficit and led late in the game, but fell to Averett University 66-59 on Sunday.

Huntingdon (7-7, 2-4 USA South) led 51-47 with 6:26 to play, but Averett (5-7, 3-3 USA South) closed the game with a 19-8 run. The Cougars pushed their lead to eight points with 1:44 left in the game and hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 23 seconds to seal the game.

Pat Pickens led Huntingdon with 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Alex Moore added eight points. Tan Munford pulled down nine rebounds and Savannah Ward finished with four assists.

Averett took a 13-2 lead to open the game and led by as many as 18 points in the first half. But the Lady Hawks closed the first half with an 18-3 run and only trailed 29-26 at halftime.

Huntingdon took its first lead of the game, a little less than four minutes into the second half. Averett regained the lead, but Huntingdon continued to battle. Neither team could build more than a four-point lead until Averett eased ahead in the final three minutes.

Huntingdon travels to North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
