34-point swing propels Huntingdon past Maryville

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The Huntingdon women's basketball team remained unbeaten in conference play with a 77-61 win over Maryville College on Sunday.

The Hawks used a 34-point swing to earn their second win over the Scots in the past three meetings.

Huntingdon trailed by 18 points, 30-12, less than a minute into the second quarter. But the Hawks chipped away at the Scots' lead and built a 16-point lead in the second half. Huntingdon outscored Maryville 65-31 in the final 29 minutes of the game and closed the game with a 28-10 run in the fourth quarter.

Senior Shaonica Thomas powered the Hawks with 23 points and nine rebounds on an 11-of-14 day from the field. In wins over Maryville and Piedmont this weekend, Thomas combined for 46 points and 18 rebounds.

Indya Lawrence added 14 points on Sunday and Ry Whetstone and Wyatt Bak each finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Kelcie Smith and Kassidy Crawford each had four assists.

Huntingdon started slow, falling behind by double digits in the first six minutes of the game. The Hawks trailed 25-12 after one quarter and fell behind 30-12 with 9:07 left in the second quarter.

That's when Huntingdon began to come around. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Smith and Destiny Cross helped start a 15-3 run. By halftime, the Hawks only trailed by nine, 38-29.

Huntingdon continued to chip away at Maryville's lead in the third quarter and only trailed 51-49 entering the fourth quarter. In the final 10 minutes, the Hawks took control.

Thomas made a basket, was fouled and hit a free throw to give Huntingdon a 52-51 lead with 9:13 to play. The Hawks would not trail again. Three 3-pointers by Bak, a basket by Thomas and five points from Whetstone put Huntingdon in front 68-59 with 4:44 remaining.
