Hawks fall to USA South West Division leader Berea

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The Huntingdon women's basketball team lost to Berea College 63-54 on Saturday.

Berea leads the West Division of the USA South Athletic Conference with a 12-0 conference record. Huntingdon is tied for third in the West Division with an 8-4 conference record.

Shaonica Thomas led the Hawks on Senior Day with 23 points and eight rebounds. Ry Whetstone added 11 points and nine rebounds and Alina Shoemake had 10 points and four assists. Sidney Ison finished with five rebounds and Indya Lawrence had four assists and four steals.

The Hawks battled Berea evenly in the first half and only trailed 24-21 at halftime. But Berea pulled ahead in the third quarter and took a 47-34 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Mountaineers extended their lead to 50-34 early in the fourth quarter before Huntingdon rallied. Sparked by a 13-0 run, Huntingdon pulled within three points, 50-47, with 3:43 to play.

But from there, Berea eased ahead and sealed the game by hitting 11-of-14 free throws in the final minutes.
