Hawks Drop Season Opener at Berry

Mount Berry, Georgia – Huntingdon Women's Basketball dropped a close game to Berry College 63-61.

From the tip, the Hawks led most of the game in their season opener, it was a close game from start to finish but the Hawks couldn't hold on at the end. The score fluctuated for the entire first quarter, the Hawks would go up one with 6:08 remaining (5-4). Then Berry would strike back with a run of their own and go up seven (12-5). The Hawks would end that run with a lay-up from sophomore Payton Corbett. The Hawks would secure the lead at the end of the first with a three by AB Davis and a jumper by Kinstin Davis to push the Hawks run to 10-2 and ending the first quarter with a score of 15-14, Hawks.  

In the second quarter, the Hawks would continue to apply pressure and cause Berry to have 5 turnovers which would convert to points for Huntingdon. Fast break points would boost the Hawks to a ten-point lead with 2:49 left to play in the first half (27-17). Berry would finish the quarter with a few lay ups to bring the score within seven to end the 2nd quarter (30-23).

At the start of the 3rd quarter, Huntingdon would continue with their success. The Hawks would again go up ten with 7:25 left in the quarter by a made free-throw from Freshman Deshauna Foote (35-25). However, a few lay-ups and a pair of free-throws would put Berry within 3 of Huntingdon halfway through the third. Buckets would continue to trade throughout the remainder of the third with the Hawks taking a six-point lead 43-37, in to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Berry would take the momentum with their first lead since the first quarter as the clock hit 7:38 (44-43). On the next play, AB Davis would come down the court to hit a three to bring the Hawks back on top. Berry would again gain the lead with a short jumper, forcing the Hawks to trail for most of the fourth quarter. With 1:53 remaining in the game, after trailing, another three pointer by AB Davis would give the Hawks a one point lead, which would be followed by a Huntingdon foul to send the Vikings to the line and tie the game at 60. In the final 29 seconds Berry would hit a layup to go up 62-60, the Hawks would attack the rim and draw a foul with 17 seconds remaining; AB Davis sunk the first free-throw but missed the second (62-61), Deshauna Foote would secure the offensive rebound off the free-throw and try for the win, but Berry would come up with the rebound. The Hawks would foul with 1 second remaining to send the Vikings to the line where they sank on last free-throw to end the game 63-31.

The Hawks return to action on November 20th as they travel to Jackson, Mississippi to take on Millsaps College.
