Hawks Fall to the Petrels in Oglethorpe Classic

Atlanta, Georgia – The Hawks dropped their game on the road to the Petrels of Oglethorpe 69-63.

The game began with a 6-2 run by the Hawks in the first two minutes. Oglethorpe soon caught up and took the lead with a layup at the 5-minute mark. The Hawks went scoreless for three minutes until sophomore, Briana McGruder secured a bucket with two minutes remaining in the first quarter (10-8). In the final minutes of the first, the Petrels secured a nine-point lead with a 9-2 run over the Hawks, leaving the score heading into the second 19-10. The second quarter was claimed by the Petrels as they claimed a 15-point lead with 6:45 remaining in the half (29-14). In the reaming six minutes of the half, Huntingdon outscored Oglethorpe 12-4 to bring the game within 7 going into halftime (33-26).

First Half Stats:

The Hawks shot 10-38 from the field and 2-11 from three.

The Petrels were 11-27 from the field and 2-8 from three.

 

In the second half, Huntingdon began to chisel away at the lead. With a few fast break points and a made three by Lauryn Lyn, the Hawks found themselves only down 2 with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter. A defensive rebound by freshman Deshauna Foote who took the ball the length of the floor for a layup tied the game at 44. Oglethorpe went to the free throw line with a foul by the Hawks where they made one that was soon answered by another layup in the paint from Huntingdon to take their first lead of the night since the first quarter (46-45). Both teams traded buckets to head into the fourth quarter with a score of 48-47, Hawks. The first five minutes of the fourth quarter went back and forth until the Hawks nailed a three to take their largest lead of the second half, 5 (57-52). Another foul by the Hawks sent Oglethorpe back to the line to make two and bring the game back within three points. Kinstin Davis drove to the hole to score two for the Hawks and regain their 5-point lead (59-54) with 3:44 left in the game. Again, Huntingdon fouled and sent Oglethorpe back to the free throw line where they shot 17-23 for the whole night at 73%. Back-to-back layups followed by the pair of free throws shot Oglethorpe back on top by one at 2:28 (60-59).

Oglethorpe outscored the Hawks 9-4 in the remaining minutes with three of those nine-points coming from the free-throw line.

The Hawks fouled 5 more times than the Petrels (13-8)

Oglethorpe shot 13 free-throws, while the Hawks shot 5

The Hawks game tomorrow, December 17th against Birmingham Southern has been postponed. The Hawks will return to action after the holiday break on January 3rd as they take on Belhaven in Mississippi at 2 pm CST.
