Hawks Dropped by Berea

Montgomery, Alabama -- The Hawks (6-14 overall, 5-7 in the CCS) three game win streak was snapped by the Mountaineers of Berea College (20-1 overall, 12-0 in the CCS) with a score of 84-69.

The Hawks struck first with an early three pointer to take their only lead for the night. That lead lasted two minutes before Berea began a 14-0 run as the Hawks struggled to put it through the hoop for three minutes (14-3). A free-throw by Briana McGruder ended the scoring drought for the Hawks with 5:45 left in the first quarter as Erica Rodriguez and Payton Corbett followed close behind with two made threes (16-10). After exchanges of baskets, Berea owned the last 3:50 with a 12-0 run to shut out the quarter 30-12. The Mountaineers closed out the first quarter with a three and opened up the second quarter with another made three to extend their run and lead. The Hawks finally gained some momentum and scored seven in a row to cut the deficit (33-19). The remainder of the half went back and forth as Huntingdon tried to regain ground. Sophomore, Cassidy Campbell stepped up for the Hawks scoring nine points in the second going 6-6 from the free-throw line to leave the Hawks down 10 heading into halftime (47-37).

The Hawks turned the ball over 8 times in the first quarter and Berea scored 12 points off of them

Hawks outscored Berea 25-17 in the second quarter

Huntingdon shot 55% from three point land

 

In the first six minutes of the second half nothing had changed, both teams continued to trade buckets until fire struck under senior AB Davis. Davis led the Hawks with 13-points in the third quarter, six of which came from three. This spark from Davis helped Huntingdon bring the game back within 6-points with three minutes left in the third (59-53). However, Berea began to add points of their own to bring the distance back to eleven heading into the fourth (67-58). An early 8-1 run in the final quarter by the Mountaineers secured the win as Huntingdon was unable to bring the game back within single digits.

Huntingdon shot 40% from the field and 50% from behind the arc, making 9
