Hawks Take Down Millsaps In Nail Biter

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Huntingdon Women's Basketball (1-1 Overall, 0-0 CCS) defeated the Millsap Majors ( 0-1 Overall, 0-0 SAA) in a tightly contested battle 67-66.

 

Highlights 

 

First Quarter

  • Huntingdon started the game off on an 11-4 run with Deshauna Foote assisting on 3 of the 4 made field goals to extend the lead

  • Two jump shots from Kennedy Ryan-Jackson pushed Huntingdon's lead to 15-7

  • A 9-3 run from Millsaps to end the quarter shrunk Huntingdon's lead to one, 18-17 going into the second

  • Huntingdon out-rebounded Millsaps 14-10 in the quarter

 

Second Quarter

  • A three-pointer from Kinstin Davis 5 seconds into the quarter pushed Huntingdon's lead back to 4

  • Briana Stuckey subbed into the game and scored 6 quick points to give the Hawks a 7 point lead 28-21 at the 6:00 minute mark in the period

  • Kinstin Davis sunk one of two free throws to give Huntingdon a 31-21 lead with 4 minutes remaining in the period

  • Kennedy Ryan-Jackson drilled a 3 point shot with 41 seconds left to put the Hawks up by 11, 42-31, but two Millsaps free throws brought the gap to 9, 42-33, going into halftime.

Third Quarter

  • A 7-2 Millsaps run to begin the quarter brought Huntingdon's lead down to three points, 44-41

  •  Neither of the two teams found the basket from the 5:25 minute mark to the 3:41 mark, where Millsaps tied the game at 44.

  • Millsaps took the lead 46-44 at the 3:00 mark with a jump shot from the wing.

  • Millsaps extended their lead to 4, 48-44, with a minute left in the quarter, but free throws from Kinstin Davis and Lauren Lyn brought the score to 49-47 going into the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

  • Millsaps held Huntingdon scoreless through the first two minutes of the quarter, but a bucket from Kinstin Davis brought the score to 53-49 with 7:26 remaining. 

  • An and-one from Center Bri McGruder sparked a 13-1 Huntingdon scoring run, putting the Hawks ahead 63-58 with 2:15 remaining in the game

  • 2 free throws from Kinstin Davis pushed the Hawks ahead 67-61 with 13 seconds remaining

  • In the final 10 seconds of the game, Millsaps made 2 free throws and a three pointer, putting them behind by one, 67-66. Following a Hawks missed free throw, their final shot from mid court to win the game fell short, and Huntingdon escaped with a victory.

 

Key Notes 

  • Huntingdon outshot the Majors from behind the arc, making 6 of their 19 attempts and holding Millsaps to only 3 of their 14 tries.

  • Millsaps outrebounded the Hawks 34-26 for the game

  • 9 second chance points from Huntingdon gave them a 3 point advantage over the Majors who scored 6 points on second chances.
