Last minute comeback puts the Hawks over BSC

DEMOREST, Ga.- Huntingdon Women's Basketball (2-3 Overall), stormed back to defeat Birmingham Southern (2-5 Overall) 64-63. 

 

Highlights

 

First quarter: 

  • The beginning of the game showcased both teams were ready to play as each team matched the other's energy and effort. With 6:05 remaining in the quarter, the score was tied 8-8. 

  • With 2:18 left, Erica Rodriguez for the Hawks hit a three pointer to give them a lead of 17-14 which was the biggest lead of the quarter. 

  • With 1:50 remaining, Birmingham Southern on the following possession would match the three pointer with one of their own, to tie the game at 17-17. 

  • The game remained deadlocked at a tie until the 0:24 mark of the quarter where Birmingham Southern would hit two free throws to grow their lead to 19-17. 

  • With 0:13 seconds left, Lauryn Lyn would end the quarter on a high note and hit two free throws to tie the game at 19-19. 

  • The score at the end of the first quarter was 19-19. 

 

Second quarter: 

  • With 8:09 remaining, Cassidy Campbell for the Hawks hit a layup that was the result of a 5-0 run giving the Hawks a 24-19 lead. 

  • Birmingham Southern responded with a 7-0 run to give them a 26-24 edge, thanks to a jump shot at the 6:29 mark. 

  • The next few minutes of action were very defensive-focused as neither team could break a tie of 30-30 until Birmingham Southern took the lead on a layup with 1:30 left in the quarter. 

  • Birmingham Southern ended the quarter on a 5-0 run, including a layup with the clock expiring to give them a lead of 35-30 going into the half.  

 

Third quarter:

  • With 8:16 remaining in the quarter, Cassidy Campbell would cut the deficit down to one with a jump shot, resulting in a score of 35-34. 

  • With 4:33 on the clock, Kinstin Davis would give the Hawks their first lead of the half with a layup, giving them a lead of one, 40-39.

  • At the 3:26 mark of the quarter, Huntingdon would have a 7-0 run capped off by two free throws courtesy of Kennedy-Ryan Jackson

  • With 1:35 left, Cassidy Campbell would give the Hawks a 9 point lead by hitting a layup making it 49-40. 

  • With only 0:18 seconds remaining, Birmingham Southern would score back to back baskets to cut the lead to 5.

  • The score at the end of the quarter was 49-44. 

 

Fourth Quarter: 

  • Birmingham Southern started the fourth quarter fast with a 8-0 run, which was concluded by a jumper with 6:52 on the clock giving them a narrow 53-52 lead. 

  • With 2:21 left in the game, Birmingham Southern went on another run of 6-0 with 2 free throws and gave them a 63-54 lead late in the game. 

  • Over the last 2:21 seconds, the Hawks would go on a 10-0 run, which included 8 points in the final 40 seconds and Makayla Ford making two free throws with 8 seconds left to give them a 1 point lead of 64-63. 

  • With four seconds remaining in the game, Lauryn Lyn would have the game sealing steal to conclude the win. 

  • The final score of the game was 64-63. 

 

Key Notes

  • Birmingham Southern shot 70% from the freethrow line while the Hawks went 79%, including hitting 6 key throws in their final 10-0 run. 

  • Birmingham Southern shot 42% from the field, including a 25% three point percentage while the Hawks shot 39%, with a 17% three point shooting percentage. 

  • The Hawks outrebounded the Panthers 35-29. 

  • There were 24 lead changes and 22 ties between the teams.
