Quick Start Pushes The Hawks Past BSC

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Huntingdon women's basketball (3-4 overall) defeated the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern College (2-7 overall) for the second time this season, 73-58.

 

Highlights 

 

First Quarter

  • Cassidy Campbell opened the scoring for the Hawks, giving Huntingdon a 2-1 lead at the 9:09 mark.

  • Jumpshots from Lauryn Lyn, Kinstin Davis, and Briana McGruder put the Hawks ahead 10-1 with 6:38 remaining in the first period.

  • Huntingdon opened up a double digit lead, 13-3, with 6:08 remaining in the period following a three point shot from Lauryn Lyn

  • Baskets from Kinstin Davis and Charity Shaw gave the Hawks a 23-11 lead going into the second quarter

 

Second Quarter

  • The Panthers opened up the second quarter with a 12-0 run, evening the score at 23 with 6:23 remaining in the half.

  • Huntingdon regained the lead 25-23 on a layup from Briana McGruder at the 6:23 mark.

  • 4 free throws from Faith Johnson gave the Hawks a 4 point advantage, 31-27, with 4:18 to go until halftime.

  • Johnson again scored on a fast break layup to close the half with the Hawks leading 39-31.

 

Third Quarter

  • At the 7:17 mark, a three point bomb from junior Cassidy Campbell put the Hawks ahead 42-35

  • A Bri McGruder layup concluded a 7-0 scoring run for the Hawks,giving Huntingdon a 46-35 lead with 6:12 remaining in the quarter.

  • A three pointer from Kinstin Davis pushed the Hawk lead to 13, making the score 51-38 with 3:10 remaining in the third.

  • Faith Johnson knocked down a jump shot with 21 seconds remaining in the quarter, giving the Hawks a 55-44 lead going into the final quarter. 

 

Fourth Quarter

  • Briana McGruder opened up the fourth quarter with a layup at the 9:47 mark to give Huntingdon a 57-44 lead.

  • Birmingham-Southern responded with a 6-0 run, bringing them within 9 at the 7:18 mark, 57-48.

  • A deep three from Deshauna Foote with 6:35 remaining in the quarter put Huntingdon ahead 60-48.

  • Faith Johnson put in another two point shot with 5:31 to go, making the score 63-49.

  • A 6-0 Panther run shrunk the Huntingdon lead to 8 points, with the Hawks leading 63-55 with two minutes to go in the game.

  • Two free throws from Deshauna Foote put the Hawks back ahead by double digits, 66-56 with 1:51 left in the game.

  • 5 free throws from Charity Shaw, Kinstin Davis, and Faith Johnson iced the game for the Hawks, with a final score of 73-58.

 

Key Notes 

  • The Hawks shot 43% from the field in the game while holding the Panthers to 35%.

  • Huntingdon's bench outscored Birmingham Southern's 25-10.

  • Huntingdon outrebounded the Panthers 45-39.
