Hawks Struggle To Find Momentum Against Oglethorpe

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Huntingdon women's basketball (3-5 overall), fell to the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University (7-3 overall) by a score of 70-64.



Highlights

 

First Quarter

  • Oglethorpe shot out of the gates on a 5-0 run in the first minute and a half.

  • Lauryn Lyn opened the scoring for the Hawks on a fast break layup, making the score 5-2 with 8:16 remaining in the quarter

  • Both teams entered a scoring drought for the next two minutes but a three pointer from Cassidy Campbell brought Huntingdon within 3, 8-5, with 6:08 to go in the period.

  • An Oglethorpe layup with 2:17 left in the quarter gave the Stormy Petrels a 17-7 lead.

  • Layups from Faith Johnson and Makayla Ford in the final minute brought the score to 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.

 

Second Quarter

  • A free throw from Oglethorpe opened the scoring for the second period at the 9:41 mark, putting them ahead of Huntingdon 24-13.

  • A layup from Makayla Ford assisted by Faith Johnson gave the Hawks their first points of the quarter, shrinking the lead to 24-15 with 8:37 to go

  • At the 6:52 mark, a Stormy Petrel layup extended their lead back to double digits at 28-17

  • Cassidy Campbell drilled another three pointer to bring the Hawks back within single digits at 28-20 with 5:42 remaining in the half

  • Huntingdon closed the period on a 9-2 scoring run, shrinking the lead to 30-26 going into the half.

 

Third Quarter

  • Similar to the second quarter, an Oglethorpe bucket at the 9:41 mark opened the second half scoring at 32-26.

  • Lauryn Lyn responded on the following possession with a shot from deep, bringing Huntingdon within 3 at 32-29.

  • A shot from Briana McGruder at the 6:52 mark brought the Hawks within 1 at 36-35.

  • A three pointer by Oglethorpe pushed their lead back to 41-35 with 5:57 to go in the quarter.

  • Both teams traded buckets on the following possessions, with a shot from Faith Johnson putting the Hawks back within 5 at 45-40 with 2:20 remaining in the quarter

  • Two free throws from Kinstin Davis brought Huntingdon within three, 45-42, with 1:56 remaining in the period.

  • Another bucket from Faith Johnson put the Hawks behind 49-46 going into the final quarter

Fourth Quarter

  • Following a layup from Oglethorpe, Faith Johnson scored another layup to make the score 51-48 with 8:49 remaining in the game.

  • Makayla Ford finished a layup at the 7:45 mark to put Huntingdon behind 51-50.

  • Oglethorpe responded with two baskets to extend their lead back to 55-51 with 6:12 remaining.

  • Kennedy- Ryan Jackson responded to a 5-0 Oglethorpe run with a three point shot,putting Huntingdon down 60-56 with 3:49 remaining in the game

  • A 4 point swing from the Stormy Petrels pushed their lead to 8 at 64-56, and the Hawks ran out of time, being defeated by a score of 70-64.

 

Key Notes 

  • Oglethorpe shot 47% on field goals for the game, holding the Hawks to 37%

  • Oglethorpe outrebounded the Hawks 46-34

  • Huntingdon never held a lead in the game.
