Hawks Late Push Comes Up Short Against Maryville

MONTGOMERY,Ala.- Huntingdon women's basketball (6-9 overall, 2-2 CCS) fell to the Maryville Scots (4-8 overall, 2-2 CCS) 58-50 in a highly contested battle.

How it happened

The Hawks struck first with a triple from Kinstin Davis. The Scots retaliated with a 6-0 run in the next minute to take a 6-3 lead at the 9 minute mark.

Not to be outdone, baskets from Briana Mcgruder and Kinstin Davis evened the score at 8 with 8 minutes to go in the first quarter, even taking a 9-8 lead with 7:30 left. A 9-0 Maryville scoring run turned the tides, and the Hawks trailed 17-11 after the first period.

Led by McGruder and Davis, the Hawks battled back to even the score at 17 with 3 minutes to go in the half. Similar to the first quarter however, the Scots would respond with a 8 point swing, taking a 27-19 lead with 40 seconds to go till halftime. Deshauna Foote buried two free throws in the final 20 seconds of the half to bring the score to 32-21 at the break.

Maryville continued their hot shooting in the second half, taking a 38-23 lead with 7 minutes to go in the third. Baskets from Charity Shaw and Deshauna Foote cut into the Scot lead, but the Hawks still trailed 45-31 going into the final quarter.

In the final period, the Hawks caught fire, outscoring Maryville 19-13. A three point shot from Kennedy-Ryan Jackson brought the Hawks within 9 at the 7:12 mark, and the Hawks kept battling from there. Baskets from Deshauna Foote and Briana McGruder brought the Hawks within 5, 53-48, with 2:34 remaining in the game. Briana Stuckey rattled home a shot from the midrange to bring the Hawks within 3, 53-50, with 2 minutes to go, but their push would prove to be slightly too late, as late game free throws helped push Maryville ahead at the end of the game to take a 58-50 victory.
