Hawks Go Cold At Belhaven

MONTGOMERY,Ala.- Coming off of a win at home, Huntingdon women's basketball (6-11 overall, 3-5 CCS) fell to the Belhaven Blazers (5-13 overall, 4-6 CCS) on the road 69-48.

 

How it happened

 

First quarter

  • Briana McGruder got the Hawks on the board on the first possession of the game with a layup, but Belhaven responded with a 12-0 run to take a 12-2 lead with 6:48 remaining in the first period.

  • A 5-0 Huntingdon run spearheaded by Faith Johnson and Kinstin Davis put the Hawks back in striking distance, 12-7 with 6 minutes remaining in the quarter

  • Not to be outdone, the Blazers struck back with a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 18-7 with 1:38 remaining in the quarter

  • A Belhaven layup in the final 20 seconds of the quarter brought the score to 22-9 entering the second period

 

Second quarter

  • Makayla Ford rang in two shots from the charity stripe to score the Hawks first points of the quarter, reducing the Belhaven lead to 22-11

  • In a quarter defined by defense, neither team could find a rhythm offensively, Nonetheless, with 5 minutes to go until halftime, Belhaven led 29-13

  • A 7-0 Hawk run led by Raven McCain put the Hawks down 29-20 with 3 minutes remaining until the halftime break

  • Following a Cassidy Campbell jumper, a pair of Belhaven free throws brought the score to 31-22 at the midway point.

 

Third quarter

  • The Blazers opened the second half with a triple on their opening possession, making the score 34-22

  • Cassidy Campbell scored two consecutive baskets to cut the lead to 39-28 with 6 minutes remaining in the quarter

  • Briana McGruder put in a layup to reduce Belhaven's lead to single digits, 39-31, at the 5:17 mark in the period

  • Belhaven followed McGruders basket with a 4-0 run to extend their lead back to 43-31 with 3:15 left in the quarter

  • Makayla Ford put in a layup at the buzzer to put the Hawks down 45-37 entering the final quarter.

 

Fourth quarter

  • Belhaven struck early in the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run, pushing their lead over the Hawks to 51-37 with 7:40 to go

  • Following a layup from Kennedy-Ryan Jackson, Belhaven grinded the Hawk offense to a halt, outscoring Huntingdon 24-11 in the final quarter to come away with a 69-48 lead

 

Key notes

  • Each squad struggled to find momentum on the offensive end, with the Hawks shooting 23% from the field compared to 34% from Belhaven

  • Belhaven converted on 16 of their 21 attempts from the free throw line, while Huntingdon made 12 of their 27 tries

  • From the three point arc, the Hawks made 2 of their 22 tries while the Blazers converted on 3 of their 11 attempts

 

The Hawks get another shot at the Blazers on January 30th at home in Roland Arena. Tip off is set for 5:00 PM CT.
