Hawks Defense Shuts Down The Scots

MONTGOMERY,Ala.-  In their second matchup of the season, Huntingdon women's basketball (10-13 overall, 7-7 CCS) took down the Scots of Covenant College (6-16 overall, 3-10 CCS) 63-51 in Roland Arena.

 

How it happened

 

First quarter

  • Briana McGruder fueled the Hawks offense early, scoring the first 6 points of the lead to give the Hawks 6-0 advantage by the 7:48 mark

  • Covenant responded on the following possession, but 4 straight points from Kinstin Davis held the Hawks lead at 10-2 with 3:33 remaining in the quarter

  • Covenant ended the quarter with a 5-2 run to enter the second quarter trailing the Hawks 12-7

 

Second quarter

  • The Scots made two free throws to open the second quarter, bringing the score to 12-9

  • Following a Kennedy-Ryan Jackson free throw, a Covenant triple made the score 13-12

  • Covenant evened the score at 15 at the 7:29 mark

  • In response, Huntingdon opened up a massive 12-2 run, with Cassidy Campbell scoring 8 on her own, to assert a 27-17 lead with 2:46 to go until halftime

  • A layup from Briana McGruder closed the half with Huntingdon holding a 29-18 lead

 

Third quarter

  • The two teams traded multiple baskets to start the second half, but Huntingdon still led by a score of 35-23

  • A massive 13-3 run from the Hawks extended the lead to 48-28 in the final minute of the quarter

  • Covenant put in a layup to bring the score to 48-30 entering the final period of play

 

Fourth quarter

  • Kennedy-Ryan Jackson responded to a pair of Covenant free throws with an and-1, giving the Hawks a 51-32 lead with 8:42 remaining

  • Jayla Carter put an end to a 6-0 Covenant run with a layup, bringing the score to 59-42 with 1:56 to go 

  • Covenant closed the game on a 9-4 run, but it would prove to be too late, as the Hawks earn their 4th straight victory 63-51

 

Key Notes

  • The Hawks converted on 84% of their free throws, while Covenant made 60% of their tries

  • Huntingdon forced 17 turnovers

  • Huntingdon's bench outscored Covenant's 35-8
